The popularity of hospitalist programs is rapidly growing across the country. PrimeDoc physicians are based at the client hospital to provide inpatient care to unassigned patients and the patients of participating physicians. Participation in the program is voluntary, and each physician decides to what extent he or she will utilize the program.

Hospitalists are medical doctors who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients. PrimeDoc hospitalists are on-site at the client hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide ongoing and immediate care. They work as partners with patients' primary-care physicians and allow private-practice physicians more time to see patients in their offices. Under traditional practices, patients might see their doctors once a day during their routine rounds.

A hospitalist program provides many benefits to patients and their doctors. Studies have shown that it leads to a shorter length of stay in the hospital. PrimeDoc hospitalists can modify treatment or follow up on a test result on the spot, instead of waiting until the next day. This hands-on approach not only helps prevent medical complications, but also results in reduced hospital stays and lower costs. Patients are ready to go home that afternoon or evening, rather than having to wait to be discharged the next day.

PrimeDoc hospitalist programs also increase patient satisfaction in other ways, because doctors are available at any time, day or night, to visit with a patient and speak with the patient's family. In addition, if an emergency occurs during a hospitalization, physicians are immediately available and can see the patient right away.

Non-hospitalized patients also benefit from PrimeDoc hospitalist programs. Without a hospitalist program in place, physicians have to leave a waiting room full of patients and rush to the hospital if there is an emergency. With a PrimeDoc hospitalist program, physicians can be assured that their hospitalized patients are getting the best of care without interrupting their daily office schedule — a huge benefit to both physicians and their patients. The on-site PrimeDoc hospitalist staff remains in contact with each patient's primary-care physician, sending faxes, providing updates, and asking for information when needed. After patients are discharged, the primary-care physician once again assumes their ongoing care.

All of PrimeDoc's hospitalist physicians have completed specialized training in internal medicine and are either certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine or recently eligible for board certification.
